What learning with Hella is like

You don't need to have surfed before. Your lesson begins with pop-up practice on the sand, then Hella covers surf etiquette and water safety before coaching you in the water with simple assists.

There is no one to keep up with. If you want to go over something again, ask for a reset. Some people want another session afterwards; others simply want a memorable first wave. Both are good outcomes.

Coming on your own

Traveling solo? A private lesson gives you Hella's full attention for two hours. You book directly with Hella by text, Instagram, or email, so you can ask anything before the day and know who will meet you.

Coming with a friend

Bring one friend for a semi-private lesson. Semi-private is for two students, so you both get coaching. Coming as a larger group? Ask Hella before you book. Tell Hella who is coming and whether anyone has surfed before.

Where you'll meet

Hella will confirm your session time when you book. Meet her at Moku Surf on Koa Avenue, where you will choose a board suited to your height and weight before walking about one block together to Waikiki Beach.

What to bring

Bring your own swimwear, towel, drinking water, and sun protection. Keep valuables to a minimum and ask before the day if you are unsure what can be stored safely.

Questions before you book

Are these lessons only for women?

No. Everyone is welcome, and the lessons and prices are the same for everyone.

Do I need surfing experience?

No. Hella offers lessons for complete first-timers as well as people returning to surfing.

What about age and swimming ability?

Lessons are for adults 18 and over. Every surfer must be able to swim at least 25 yards without help and be comfortable in water over their head; a beginner surf lesson is not a swimming lesson. Not sure? Ask Hella before booking. Full requirements.

I'm nervous about the ocean. Is that okay?

Yes. Tell Hella what worries you when you get in touch. You start on the sand, and you can ask for a reset at any point in the water. The swimming requirement above still applies.

What if the weather or my plans change?

Cancel or reschedule for free with at least 24 hours' notice. Later cancellations and no-shows are not refunded, but Hella will move a late-cancelled lesson once if she has an open time in the next 30 days. If Hella cancels for unsafe surf or weather, you choose a free reschedule or a full refund; light rain does not stop a lesson. Full cancellation policy.

Ask Hella about these terms

Is a board included?

Board rental is included with a private lesson. It costs an additional $15 per person for semi-private lessons.

How do I book?
